This app is a must! Microsoft CRM has this feature, now you can get it in Salesforce. 

Also see List Browse for similar Microsoft CRM-like featuresI'm not so sure about this one - it takes the users away from their main tabs. 

Setup

NOTE: You won't be able to use this if you have record types and your views do not reference the record types (see https://success.salesforce.com/answers?id=90630000000gsqSAAQ) OR if you do not have a custom button on the list (https://developer.salesforce.com/forums?id=906F00000009ByEIAU) - you need the checkboxes to be displayed on the list view.
